SNORKELING

MABUL - SIPADAN - KAPALAI

Mabul, Sipadan and Kapalai offers some of the most unique and fantastic snorkeling opportunities in the world.

Surprisingly, snorkeling in Mabul is an entirely different experience from snorkeling in nearby Sipadan.

While the main draw of snorkeling in Sipadan are the big fish and huge sea turtles, snorkeling in Mabul is known for sightings of the weird and wonderful along with coral reefs and sea turtles.

SNORKELING IN THE MUCK

Mabul Island is known as one of the best muck diving locations in the world, and as all muck diving enthusiasts will tell you, where there’s muck there’s magic.

Snorkeling in Mabul also presents the chance to see some interesting and odd-looking creatures, and snorkelers are lucky enough to be able to see these creatures without the need to put on a tank and visit the ocean’s depths.

SNORKELING TRIPS

If you wish to see more of the area and snorkel around the nearby islands such as Sipadan, Kapalai, Siamil or Mataking, a quick day trip is an easy way to do so.

Many resorts offer these snorkeling day trips from Mabul and combine the in-water activities with picnic lunches on deserted beaches or island hoping trips to beautiful and untouched islands.

TUN SAKARAN MARINE PARK

It is not necessary to stay on Mabul Island in order to snorkel there and experience the interesting marine life below the surface.

Travellers often choose to stay at nearby Mataking, Pom Pom Island or Semporna and opt for a day excursion to snorkel at the Tun Sakaran Archipelago as there are all sorts of wacky must-see marine animals that are unique to the area.

SNORKELING SAFETY TIPS

Snorkeling trips usually begin with a brief safety message from the snorkeling guide to acquaint you with the equipment you’ll be using, what you need to be aware of in the area, how to remain safe during the trip and how to assist with marine conservation.

The snorkeling guide will also remind you that it is never recommended to snorkel alone as you should always be with a buddy or group.

Although snorkeling doesn’t require any special training, participants do need to be comfortable swimming in the water and should be able to breathe easily through a snorkel.

If you are bringing your children along to snorkel in Mabul, ask for special lifejackets for kids.

UNDERWATER CAMERA

Snorkeling in Mabul will give you the chance to observe some odd-looking creatures in their natural environment, so it’s a good idea to rent an underwater camera to capture these marine creatures on film.

Your friends and family back home won’t believe the things you’ve seen, and pictures speak a thousand words.
